The Chains

The chains fell off her ankles

as she reached up for the clouds.

The chains fell off her ankles

too weak to keep her down.

The chains fell from her ankles

as she took off for distant shores.

The chains fell from her ankles

able to shackle her no more.

The chains fell off her ankles

as she journeyed to new lands.

The chains fell off her ankles

as she grew deaf to their demands.

The chains slid off her ankles

though she couldn’t fathom why.

The chains slid off her ankles

but Lord knows it wasn’t her first try.

The chains fell from her ankles

the ones she’d battled her whole life.

The chains fell off her ankles

the ones that caused her so much strife.

The chains dropped from her ankles

as she seized life with both hands.

The chains dropped from her ankles

as she dreamed and schemed and planned.

The chains fell off her ankles

as she stood up straight and tall.

The chains fell off her ankles

and looking down she saw

The chains that held her ankles —

were never there at all.

What’s holding you back in your life today? Are the chains real or imagined? Either way, break them!
